April Recap…

I haven’t posted in about 10 days since Winter came to a screeching halt after the last storm. The long-range looks to continue to be dry. Last year the season kept going right through May but this year is nothing like last year.

We did pretty well with total precip and ok with snow. Around 3-5 feet fell on the resorts during April bringing the season totals to around 73% of average. The snowpack as of May 1st dropped to 28% of average in the Tahoe Basin as compared to 208% this time last year, and down to 44% in the Truckee River Basin.

Looking at the NWS April report the Lake Tahoe Basin saw 103% of average precip and the Truckee River Basin 112%. That brings them both to around 70% of average so far on the water year. The summer is normally dry so we won’t move much from that number.

The average temperture in Truckee during April is 39.8 degrees and we were at 40 degrees this April. So we were right around average again.

The weather looks tranquil the next two weeks. We saw some cooler temps the last few days but we will warm into the 60′s this week. It looks like we may see some warmer temps week 2.

With the boring weather I may not need to post again until the May recap. If something comes up I’ll let you know. Enjoy Spring…BA

Dry Cement…

With the wet snow up high and rain down low yesterday, then add in temperatures in the 20′s and it should be solid out there this morning.

Resort Totals page is updated as of the 6 a.m. reports. We still have 5 resorts open and reports of 1-4 inches from the storm yesterday. Heavenly came in with the most, but is also the highest and changed over to snow sooner.

The sun is out today and Spring will return for the weekend. It will be beautiful out and the base on the mountains that are still open is bigger now than it was the 3rd week of February. Should be nice if you are heading out on the slopes or just spending time outside.

Pretty boring weather ahead but I will update as soon as I see something of interest. April recap will be out next week. BA

Wet and Cold…

The snow levels were slow to come down last night as they didn’t come below 8000 ft. until early this morning.  That kept accumulating snow off most of the mountains until today.  Kirkwood was reporting 2 inches this morning but they go above 9000 ft. at the summit.

The snow levels came down all day and the snow even mixed in around lake level this afternoon.  It was snowing pretty hard over Donner Summit and the crest.  Sugarbowl reported a couple of inches during the day today and looking at some resorts cams it looked like a few inches up top on the mountains.

The precip has cleared out now as the temps continue to fall.  The slower falling snow levels and quick end to precip once they fell kept potential accumulations down a little.  Tonight temps will drop into the 20′s and they are already there on the mountains.

Temps at night this weekend and next week will stay just above freezing, so no freeze/thaw cycle.  Not the best corn snow season this year.  Tems at lake level will be up into the 60′s this weekend through next week so Spring is setting in for a while.  Storms will hit the Pacific NW next week but should stay well to our North.

Looks kind of boring weather wise for now.  Will take a look at the final snow totals in the morning.  BA

April Showers…

Some heavier precip moving up from the South this evening.  Snow levels look like they are still up above 9000 ft.  We should see them come down a thousand feet or more overnight.

Still some pretty big spread in the total liquid forecast on the models.  Looking at the radar it looks like the moisture coming up from the South tonight ahead of the cold front is enough to beat the forecast being shown on the GFS for both systems of a half inch.

Snow levels will come down close to lake level tomorrow and I would still expect a few inches above 7000 ft.  Above 8000 ft. where some snow fall tonight and then again Thursday we could see up to 6 inches.  Highest peaks along the crest we could see more than that.

Winds will pick up tomorrow with the colder air moving in with some high gusts.

Then Spring returns.  Will take a look at the snow levels in the morning and see if any of the resorts picked up snow overnight up top.  BA
